What happened in Toterfout 1952
TABLING ABUSES: “TOFFELEN”
'The morning after' a charivari in the catholic Kempen-region (Zandoerle, 1952). The farmyard is littered with vehicles (no fewer than 57) and agricultural tools. The entrances are blocked with carts. In the foreground is an earth cart (“erdkar”) that has been made “protestant”: the cart was rendered unusable by pulling the burries topsy turvy backwards under the axle. At the end of the burries is a potato or pig mill. On Saturday night, amid great hilarity, a cot with a doll lying on a straw “mattress” was placed in the eaves of the farmhouse, signifying that this folk court is concerned with violations of morality in relation to marriage and sexuality. In this case, it concerned a lover who “stood up” his girlfriend by breaking off their engagement at the last minute.
